I believe it depends on the individual. Ideally having both would be the best. Having a college degree let's employers know you are capable of learning. If you can teach that to yourself, then you will probably work for yourself.

I also believe that it depends on the individual. Most of the greats in art and painting were self-taught. Self-education can be a wonderful thing. I personally have no college art education. I think that both would be ideal, the college experience teaches technique and appreciation. I'm an English major, but plan to minor in sculpture.

Hey! great input! I happen to agree with both of you, as I'm going BACK to college (after 20 years) to not only learn more about what I am already doing, but to fulfill a dream. I am in love with abstract painting, and I think it is going to be important to learn more about that. Anyone else have an opinion? Love to hear it!

Some of the best artists out there are self taught. This does not mean that you cannot learn a thing or two from a professor or a class, but art is something that comes from a person's freedom of expression. I believe a college degree doesnt exactly show what you know, it just shows that you are committed, and if you complete a degree, you surely love or care about what you are doing. So does it matter? Yes. Should it matter? Maybe not.

Yes, again I agree, with emphasis on COMMITMENT.Without it I don't think I(personally) would be doing much of anything worthwhile. I don't know.I have always wanted to be an artist. I am finding out that sometimes it takes more than that. For me anyway. Now, I want to learn, learn, learn.

There is a big difference between Talent and Drive....

I feel either one can get you far in the art world. Have both is killer :)

As for a formal education, it's all relative. I suppose it depends on the teacher. Has life and its trials and tribulations been your teacher? Then I suppose you could say you have been formally taught. Trial by error happens in and outside of a classroom....hence, the learning process and growth as an artist.

That definitely applies to most people here! or all from what I've seen of the work displayed.

I am replying to the last 2 posts before me here. Yes I've heard some stories about different "Art" teachers, mostly that they want you to conform to their concepts (?)be that as it may, I've always wanted to be a music teacher, so I do understand about that, some what. Some people scoff, and say "those that can't do, teach" but I have come to the conclusion that those that can do, also teach, and I'm looking forward to some one else giving me some wisdom. I agree with all of the opinions here, I am glad that none of it has been negative.
